NEW YEAR’S EVE (2017)
In 1983 Nedyalko Geshev, a survivor, published the book Belene - the island of the forgotten in Brussels, Belgium. In the memoir he narrates his and others’ traumatic experiences in the gulag camp Belene. He also recalled the New Year’s celebration of 1953. On the night of the 31st of December, he and his fellow inmates were all given an apple and a cigarette each to welcome the new year.
In the New Year’s Eve moving image piece I have again used old military clothing to reference the clothes which the inmates wore, which were given to them at their arrival. A man smokes a cigarette and eats an apple. I attempt to ask about the experience and way in which one will eat the fruit and smoke the tobacco when imprisoned in a gulag camp.
